HIBERNATING OFFENSE COSTS BEARS

November 25, 2009

HIBERNATING OFFENSE COSTS BEARS Hershey Drops Second Consecutive Game to Atlantic Division Opponent By Jess Mikula The BEARS scored first but failed to muster a come-from-behind effort Wednesday night, as they fell to the Providence Bruins in a 4-1 defeat. Alexandre Giroux drew Providence netminder Dany Sabourin out of the net and dished a pass to Boyd Kane at the top of the crease to set up the first goal of the game at 7:29. Kane potted the point-blank shot for his sixth of the season, the secondary assist recorded by John Carlson. The P-Bruins answered, as a 4-on-4 tally from Kirk MacDonald found its way into the back of the net past the outstretched leg pad of Michal Neuvirth at 13:39. Providence picked up the go-ahead goal with Alain Goulet’s screamer from the blueline deflecting off of Drew Larman at 16: 45. HERSHEY was out-shot by a 12-7 margin and carried a one-goal deficit to the dressing room after 20 minutes. Neither team found the score sheet in the second period, though the BEARS came close on an odd man rush. Keith Aucoin and Giroux broke into the Bruins’ zone and fed Kane, though he failed to fire a shot on goal. HERSHEY found itself on the wrong end of a 5-on-3 late in the second stanza, with Trevor Bruess and Steve Pinizzotto both in the box for a 34 second span. The Chocolate and White’s flawless home penalty kill delivered yet again, as the BEARS blanked Providence on its fourth and fifth man advantages of the night. The score remained 2-1 after two. Providence’s Jamie Arniel capitalized on a Sean Collins turnover, going top shelf, glove side on Neuvirth for the unassisted goal at 4:38. Andrew Gordon and Kyle Wilson tried to rally with a rush midway through the period, but Wilson’s shot glanced just wide and into the side of the net. As Neuvirth was being waved to the bench late in the third, Craig Weller sent him scrambling back toward the HERSHEY net. Weller fired a shot from neutral ice, and as Neuvirth frantically dove to protect the vacant net, the puck went sailing wide. When Neuvirth did eventually make it to the bench, the P-Bruins’ Brad Marchand potted an empty net marker from Arniel at 18:41. Suffering the loss in net, Neuvirth turned aside 27 of 30 shots faced. HERSHEY was denied on both power plays but defended its perfect home penalty kill on five Providence chances. In Wednesday’s loss, the BEARS fell in regulation for the first time this season when scoring the game’s first goal. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Boyd Kane (goal) 2. Michal Neuvirth (27 saves on 30 shots) 3. Dany Sabourin (24 saves on 25 shots) Notes: Grant McNeill made his 2009-2010 debut Wednesday night. John Carlson and Andrew Gordon were assigned by Washington on Tuesday. Carlson appeared in three games for the Capitals, including his NHL debut against Montreal on Friday, Nov. 20, while Gordon skated in two games during his call-up. Washington recalled defenseman Karl Alzner for the team’s home contest with Buffalo on Wednesday night. The BEARS will spend Thanksgiving en route to Glens Falls for Friday night’s match-up with the Phantoms for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. HERSHEY will then return to Giant Center for a pair of home games Saturday and Sunday night. Saturday the Adirondack Phantoms come to town, with face-off slated for 7:00 p.m. before Sunday’s 5:00 p.m. start against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Tickets for both games are available at the Giant Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.
