BEARS SEND PENGUINS MARCHING

BEARS SEND PENGUINS MARCHING Hershey Penalty Kill Still Perfect on Home Ice By Jess Mikula It was a night of firsts for HERSHEY on Saturday, as Karl Alzner’s first goal of the season and Trevor Bruess’ first professional point gave the BEARS a 3-1 victory over the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The BEARS’ offense dominated early, assailing Wilkes-Barre/Scranton netminder John Curry with a barrage of shots. HERSHEY found the back of the net as a short-handed shot from Boyd Kane ricocheted over Curry’s shoulder at 5:02. Jay Beagle tallied the lone assist on Kane’s fourth goal of the season. The Baby Pens surged late in the period but were denied by backstop Michal Neuvirth on all nine chances. The BEARS carried a 1-0 advantage to the dressing room after one. Doubling up Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in shots on goal 16-8 in the second period, the Chocolate and White found the back of the net with Alzner’s first of the year late in the period. Amidst an offensive zone littered with Penguin sticks, Alzner fired a one timer from the left circle, fed by Steve Pinizzotto and Bruess at 17:22. The secondary assist marked Bruess’ first professional point. Neuvirth again held the visiting Penguins scoreless, as HERSHEY maintained a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes of play. Jesse Boulerice spoiled Neuvirth’s shutout, potting a goal on a breakaway with Tim Wallace and Joe Vitale at 9:54. Kyle Wilson answered for the BEARS. John Carlson fired a screamer from the point, as Wilson picked up the rebound, offered Curry a quick deke and buried the puck in the net for his third of the season at 13:28. HERSHEY killed off a late Wilkes-Barre/Scranton two-man advantage to earn the regulation win. Michal Neuvirth earned his second win in as many games and his sixth of the year, allowing one goal on 28 shots. The BEARS were denied on all five power play opportunities, but the penalty kill was flawless, blanking the Baby Pens on three chances. The penalty kill has been successful 57 of 64 times this season, allowing just five power play goals in 17 games, earning a ranking of fourth overall in the AHL and first in penalty killing on home ice. HERSHEY has yet to surrender a power play goal on Giant Center ice this season. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Karl Alzner (first goal of the year, game-winner) 2. Michal Neuvirth (27 saves on 28 shots) 3. Trevor Bruess (first professional point with assist) Notes: Though expected to make his 2009-2010 debut, Grant McNeill was scratched from Saturday night’s game. Sean Collins and Brandon Sugden were both healthy scratches. The BEARS will trek to Binghamton Friday, November 20, to face the Senators with a 7:05 p.m. start before returning home to play host to the Springfield Falcons Saturday night. Face-off is slated for 7:00 p.m., with tickets still available at the Giant Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.
