BEARS AND RATS MEET FOR FIRST TIME IN 2009-10 SATURDAY

October 30, 2009

The BEARS return home briefly to host the Albany River Rats Saturday night at Giant Center. Face-off is at 7:00 p.m. Left wing Alexandre Giroux scored twice and assisted on two others, Francois Bouchard picked up the first four-point game of his professional career, and the BEARS slammed the Hartford Wolf Pack 6-0 Friday night at XL Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Hartford. Goaltender Jason Bacashihua posted the first shutout of his HERSHEY career, and the 15th AHL whitewash of his career. Andrew Joudrey scored the game-winning goal short-handed in the first period, and Mathieu Perreault picked up his first goal of the season in the triumph. In parent club news, The New York Islanders got two goals from Franz Nielsen in regulation time Friday, then won the game in sudden-death overtime 4-3 at Verizon Center against the Capitals. Tomas Fleischmann, who spent two games with the BEARS last weekend here at GIANT Center on a conditioning stint, scored two goals in the losing effort. Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season in the setback. Albany begins the night just one point back of HERSHEY in the East Division standings, following a 4-3 shootout loss to Springfield Friday night. Jerome Samson leads the team in scoring, with 12 points in 10 games this season. Goaltender Justin Peters leads Albany in wins (4), goals against average (2.40) and saves percentage (92.2 percent) It’s a fairly light Saturday schedule on this Halloween night, as seven other games make up the AHL docket. Peoria is at Lake Erie to face the Monsters, as Lowell travels to Springfield to take on the Falcons at Mass Mutual Center. Providence is in Hartford to play the Wolf Pack, Worcester takes on Manchester at Verizon Wireless Arena, and Bridgeport travels to Portland to play the Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Two games out west include the Chicago Wolves in Austin to play the Texas Stars, and Milwaukee is in Rockford to play the IceHogs. Following Saturday’s game, the BEARS will play four straight games on the road, not returning to Giant Center until Friday, November 13 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Saturday’s game can be heard via the BEARS Radio Network (100.1 FM and www.Sportsjuice.com) beginning at 6:40 p.m. eastern. John Walton has the call of the action from Giant Center. Tickets are available at the Giant Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
