HERSHEY RALLIES TO DOWN PIRATES SUNDAY

October 25, 2009

PINIZZOTTO PLUNDERS PIRATES Short-Handed Goal Gives Bears 3-2 Win By Jess Mikula Despite giving up two quick goals to the Portland Pirates in the second period, HERSHEY was able to rally in the third and come up with a 3-2 victory before a sellout crowd of 10,727 at Giant Center Sunday night. The BEARS got on the board early, as Francois Bouchard finished an Oskar Osala wraparound to net his third goal of the season at 2:22. Zach Miskovic tallied the secondary assist for his first professional point. Goaltender Jason Bacashihua stopped a late barrage from the Portland power play to keep the Pirates off the score sheet. HERSHEY carried a one-goal advantage to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. The Pirates answered early in the second stanza with two even-strength markers, blanketing the crowd with a deafening silence for the remainder of the period. Jeff Cowan notched a backhander from Felix Schutz and Joe DiPenta at 2:06 before Philip Gogulla buried the puck five-hole on Bacashihua 28 seconds later to record the first AHL goal of his career. The BEARS failed to find the equalizer and trailed the visiting Pirates 2-1 after two periods. Andrew Gordon knotted the score at 2-2 early in the third period, tallying his sixth goal of the season at 5:52. Tomas Fleischmann and Kyle Wilson added the assists, as “Flash” picked up his first point in a HERSHEY sweater since the 2007 Calder Cup Finals. Amidst a four minute, high-sticking double minor to Mathieu Perreault, Steve Pinizzotto and Andrew Joudrey broke into the Portland zone in an odd-man-rush. Pinizzotto then launched a screaming slap shot from the top of the right circle to give the Chocolate and White the go-ahead goal in short-handed fashion at 12:35. Pinizzotto’s goal, his second of the year, was also his second short-handed goal of the 2009-2010 campaign. The first was scored at Binghamton on Oct. 10. Darren Reid was issued a penalty shot late in the period, after he was tripped on a breakaway, but he was denied by Portland netminder Jhonas Enroth. Jason Bacashihua earned the win in his first appearance on Giant Center ice Sunday night, stopping 21 of 23 shots. The BEARS out-shot the Pirates by a 35-23 margin but were blanked on all three power play opportunities. Sunday night’s victory marked the first time that HERSHEY had won when trailing the opposing team after two periods. The BEARS also improved to 4-0-0 when scoring the first goal of the game. Bears Radio Network Three Stars of the Game: 1. Steve Pinizzotto (short-handed, game-winning goal) 2. Andrew Gordon (game-tying goal) 3. Zach Miskovic (first professional point) Notes: Tomas Fleischmann concluded his conditioning stint with the BEARS Sunday night. On recall to Washington, Keith Aucoin scored the game-tying goal for the Capitals Saturday night against the New York Islanders. All three goals for the Red, White and Blue were scored by BEARS alumni, with the first marker from Mike Green and the overtime game winner from Brooks Laich. HERSHEY will travel to Hartford Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. start against the Wolf Pack before hosting the Albany River Rats on Saturday night. Face-off is slated for 7:00 p.m., with tickets still available at the Giant Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911.
