ADIRONDACK SLIPS BY BEARS 2-1 IN GLENS FALLS

October 16, 2009

PHANTOMS EDGE BEARS 2-1 FRIDAY A narrow setback for HERSHEY kicked off a three-game road trip for the Chocolate and White Friday, as the BEARS fell to the Adirondack Phantoms 2-1 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The two teams played a quiet first period, with six shots on goal apiece and neither goaltender allowing the other team to take advantage. The period was further quieted by the fact that neither team committed a single penalty in the first 20 minutes. Adirondack finally broke the scoreless deadlock with a power play goal from Patrick Maroon at the 3:24 mark to take a 1-0 lead, but HERSHEY would rally. Jay Beagle picked up his first goal of the season from Patrick McNeill and Andrew Gordon at 18:26 to tie the game at 1-1 before second intermission. The only goal came in the third proved to be the game-winner from a rookie defenseman. Kevin Marshall scored in the slot against Neuvirth at 6:20 to put the Phantoms ahead for good, as Adirondack won for just the second time this season in four tries. The loss dropped HERSHEY to 3-2-0-0 on the season. BEARS Radio Network Three Stars of the game: 1. Jonas Backlund (Made big stops for the Phantoms, especially in the third) 2. Kevin Marshall (Rookie’s first pro goal was also the game-winner) 3. Jay Beagle (Scores first goal of season on his birthday) Notes: The BEARS head to Binghamton to take on the Binghamton Senators in the second game of the current three-game road trip. The game also marks the second consecutive Saturday the Chocolate and White have played a game at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, defeating the Senators last Saturday 8-1. Brandon Sugden and Pat Wellar were among the healthy scratches for HERSHEY Friday night. The Capitals announced on Friday that goaltender Braden Holtby was recalled to the NHL club from South Carolina (ECHL). Holtby, who was assigned to the Stingrays this week from HERSHEY, is expected to back up Semyon Varlamov Saturday as Washington takes on Nashville at Verizon Center. The power play goal allowed by HERSHEY in the second period was the first allowed by the Chocolate and White this season.
