The Road to the Calder Cup Championship

June 12, 2009

It may be hard to believe but the regular season came to an end way back on April 12! Since then, the Bears fought and won many exciting battles. Here’s a look at the route the Chocolate and White took to the Championship Game! With a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms on April 11, the Bears clinched the East Division Title for the second time in the past three seasons. The club then faced the Philadelphia Phantoms in the East Division Semi-Finals. With a 1-0 win at Giant Center on April 24, the Bears swept the Phantoms in four games en route to the 2009 East Division Finals. On May 10, it was do-or-die for the Bears, down 3-2 in the East Division Finals against the Penguins. But the Bears tied the series at 3 with a 3-0 victory forcing game 7. With Puckhead in the house, the Bears blanked the Penguins 3-0 to win the East Division Title and advancing them to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Providence Bruins. After a 3-2 loss in Game 1 against the Bruins, the Bears used a run of four straight wins to defeat the Bruins 5-2 in Game 5 to claim the Eastern Conference Championship. On May 26th, Bears General Manager, Doug Yingst announced that the team would face the West Champion, the Manitoba Moose in the Calder Cup Finals. This would be the first-ever appearance in the Calder Cup finals for the Moose. Game 1 was held in Manitoba, and the Bears stunned the Moose with a 5-4 overtime win. Manitoba rallied back in Game 2 with a 3-1 win over the Bears at the MTS Centre. The Bears returned to Giant Center on Saturday, June 6 and thrilled the hometown crowd of 10,696 fans with a 3-0 win to lead the series at two games to one. Sunday night at Giant Center was another sellout with 10,739 fans rising from their seats for the final minute of play to watch the Bears hang on to their 2-1 lead! The victory in Game 4 gave the Bears a 3-1 lead on the best-of-seven series. Game 5 at Giant Center drew a record crowd of 10,860 fans. The Chocolate and White came up short with a 3-2 loss sending the series back to Manitoba. For the 10th time in history, the Hershey Bears earned the coveted Calder Cup in Game 6 at MTS Centre! Congratulations Hershey Bears â€" 2008-2009 Calder Cup Champions!
