BEARS HOST PENGUINS IN EAST DIVISION TILT FRIDAY

January 23, 2009

HERSHEY returns to the friendly confines of GIANT Center Friday night, welcoming East Division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to town at 7:00 p.m. The in-state rivals meet for the fifth time this season, with both teams ranking among the highest scoring offenses in the American Hockey League. Alexandre Giroux’s 15-game goal streak was etched into the record books Wednesday after the Norfolk Admirals ended the run in HERSHEY’S 6-2 win at Norfolk Scope. Even with the goal streak over, Giroux still has major history to chase Friday night. With points in 20 straight games, Giroux will look to set a new franchise record for points in 21 consecutive games. Wes Jarvis holds a share of the current mark at 20 in a row during the 1981-82 season. Giroux tied the record Wednesday with an assist in Norfolk. The Penguins come to central PA Friday winners of two straight having also collected points in six of its last 10 games. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has scored 157 goals this season, ranking the Pens third in the AHL in that department. Only the BEARS (178) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (158) have scored more than the Baby Pens. Around the East Division Friday, the Binghamton Senators look to increase its lead over fifth place Philadelphia with a game in Albany against the River Rats at 7:00 p.m. Bridgeport is in Portland Friday, while Manchester visits the Phantoms at the Wachovia Spectrum. The Norfolk Admirals are at home Friday to face the Lake Erie Monsters. HERSHEY has an eight point lead over second place Bridgeport entering Friday’s action, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is nine back while Binghamton is 12 behind the front running Chocolate and White. Friday’s game can be heard via the BEARS Radio Network (100.1 FM, 1490 AM, Sportsjuice.com, AHLLive.com) beginning with the pregame show at 6:40 p.m. The game can also be heard Friday nationwide in the United States and Canada on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio beginning at 7:00 p.m. NHL Home Ice XM 204 and Sirius 208 will carry all of the action. John Walton and Ed Coffey have the call of the action from GIANT Center.
