07/02/2010 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 2, 2010

Capitals Sign Goaltender Dany Sabourin

ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Dany Sabourin to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A 6'4", 200-pound native of Val-d'Or, Quebec, Sabourin (SA-boo-rihn) is a 10-year professional who has played 57 NHL games for Calgary, Pittsburgh and Vancouver. He spent 2009-10 with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting a 28-27-0 record in 56 appearances with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage and three shutouts. He finished third in the AHL in saves (1,579), fourth in minutes (3,278) and tied for sixth in wins.

Sabourin, who will turn 30 on Sept. 2, played 43 games in the NHL in 2007-08 and '08-09 while with the Penguins, posting a 16-17-3 record in that time. This season marked the first time since the 2004-05 work stoppage that he didn't play at least one game at the NHL level. He was named the AHL's top goaltender in 2005-06 when he led the league with a 2.26 goals-against average with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Sabourin was originally a fourth-round choice, 108th overall, of Calgary in the 1998 NHL Draft.
